Worship seminar to address ‘Honoring the Hymns’

Huntington, Ind.-The Huntington University worship leadership program will offer a free seminar titled "Honoring the Hymns: Helping Traditional Songs Come Alive for Contemporary Congregations" by Dr. Bob Myers, assistant professor of worship leadership. The seminar will be held at 4:30 p.m. on March 27 in room 150 of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

"There is a growing interest in adding hymns in contemporary worship," Myers said. "I have a passion for hymns that I would like to use to help motivate the future leaders of the church by doing this seminar."

The seminar's primary approach will focus on how to put hymns in contemporary musical language and worship. It will deal with a limited number of hymns in a musical setting. It also will show the basic principles and traditional ways to incorporate hymns with piano, synthesizers and other instruments.

Myers heads up the Huntington University worship leader program. He joined the Ministry and Missions Department in the fall of 2005. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Biola University and a Master of Music in choral conducting from California State University. He earned his Doctor of Worship Studies from the Institute for Worship Studies in Orange Park, Fla., in 2006.

Myers served as a pastor of worship since 1997 at Central Baptist Church in Sioux City, Iowa, before coming to Huntington University. At Central Baptist Church, Myers planned and led both traditional and contemporary worship, oversaw various vocal and instrumental ensembles, and taught classes on worship. Myer also was a worship leader at Promise Keepers gatherings and the International Center for Biblical Counseling Biennial Conference as well as chairman for several Association for Christian Schools International children's choral festivals in Orange County, Calif.
