TESOL/EL

Why TESOL?

More than 1.7 billion people in the world currently learn and use English worldwide, and for more than 2/3 of those people English is not their first language. English learners bring rich linguistic and cultural assets to the classroom, but they also face unique challenges that can impact their academic success if not properly addressed. Without targeted support, these students may struggle to access the curriculum, participate fully in school life, and achieve their full potential.

This certificate program prepares educators to meet the needs of English learners by offering comprehensive training in second language acquisition, English language development, culturally sustaining pedagogy, assessment and differentiation, and effective collaboration with families and colleagues. The program combines evidence-based coursework with hands-on field experiences in diverse educational settings, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the needs of multilingual learners.

Educators who complete this program will be licensed to teach English learners in a variety of P-12 settings and will serve as advocates for multilingual learners and their families. For licensed teachers who already have experience teaching English learners in your classroom, the accelerated program may be a good fit for you.

TESOL courses also equip participants for teaching English overseas, supporting licensed teachers in schools in the U.S. or abroad, teaching in community or church-based ESL programs, supporting learners through social work organizations, and working in nonprofit outreach to immigrants, refugees, and English learners born in the U.S.
